Andorra (.ad): Andorra names are very complicated and demanding to register, they are also quite heavily restricted. Whatever your status, you must first apply to the "Office for State Emblems and Signs (Servei de Signes dÕEstat)" for permission to use a .ad domain name. This authorisation, if granted, lasts for two years, after which it needs to be re-applied for. You can re-apply for authorisation three months before the current authorisation is due to expire, and you are expected to pay the renewal fee too. If you are an individual, the domain name must either be the applicant's first name or initial followed by the surname or else the first name followed by the surname or its initial. Numbers may be added to these names. You must also register this name under .nom.ad. You must also state the domain name is to be used privately by a non profit organisation. The registry state:
"If the applicant is a legal entity, the domain name shall consist of the name of the entity which is
registered in Andorra and may or may not include the abbreviation of the company's
legal form. The domain name shall contain the subdomain ".nom" between the
second level domain name and the top level domain name ".ad"."
If the domain name "will be used as a trademark", the trademark must be registered in Andorra, it must have been examined by "Trademark Office of the Principality of Andorra (OMPA)", the applicant must be the owner or exclusive licensee of the trademark. The domain name must be identical to the trademark. If the domain name is going to be used for a business, the business must be registered in Andora and the domain name must match the business name. There is a limit of 3 domain names per person (although exceptions can be made if you can justify your need for more, and the Andorra registry accepts this justification ). .ad domain names are can not be transferred between owners. If domain name is to be used for email accounts, you must get permission to use the domain name as a mail server when you apply for permission to use a .ad domain name. If you intend having email accounts @yourdomain.ad, tell the "Office for State Emblems and Signs (Servei de Signes dÕEstat)" you plan on doing this when you apply to them. There are also additional rules regarding what email addresses can be created for use with an .ad domain name. Name servers must be set up in advance of the application, and this can add a further 24 hours onto the registration process. Once a .ad domain name has been assigned, the holder is expected to launch a website under the .ad domain name which contains: "their name, address, business activity, goods or services offered, a graphic mark or other elements - which enables the Internet user to simply and quickly identify and access the final address desired."
